Local Attractions
Situated on the back doorstep of Te Aroha township, Mt Te Aroha is
one of the country's most accessible nature reserves. Your choice of
walks range from a gentle walk along the best of the mountain
to a more challenging walk from the Te Aroha Domain, to the very top
of Mt Te Aroha (952m).
You are treated to an ever-changing landscape, with the track making
its way through a variety of bush types. The views from the
summit are breathtaking, taking in views of the Coromandel down through
to the Bay of Plenty, across the plains to Mt Pirongia, and on clear
days, right down to Mt Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Naturally
at this height above sea level, the air can be very cold, so it is
suggested that walkers are prepared for the change in temperature and
take warm jackets/pants and a hat.
More bush walks can be found just a couple of minutes drive
south of Te Aroha, in the Waiorongomai area, with a variety of lengthy
walks available.
If bushwalking is not for you, try the mountain biking tracks
instead.
Te Aroha Domain offers a peaceful area at the base of the
mountain to wander or sit and relax. Historically Te Aroha Domain was
well known for its soda water baths which brought people from all over
New Zealand to bathe in the restorative waters.
Today Cadman Building, once the main bath house, houses the local museum.
You can discover how Te Aroha was not only known for its bathing benefits,
but also a gold-mining town supporting the local Waiorongomai gold fields.
The Domain continues to offer restorative bathing with
both its spa pool complex and private baths.
Sporting facilities including croquet, bowls and petanque,
together with a skating rink that can be found in the Domain. Local
artwork is also on view at various times. Located at the end of the
town shopping area, its ease of access makes it a popular location.
Te Aroha's natural beauty is enhanced with amazing sunrise and equally
spectacular sunsets. This magical town offers so much, yet is within
an hour's driving distance from Hamilton, Tauranga, Thames, Waihi,
Matamata, Paeroa and Morrinsville.
